Relentless Heat And A Multi-Day Severe Threat
Everything is bigger in Texas, or so they say. That certainly seems to ring true as residents of this region are waking up to day 348675 of a relentless heatwave.
Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. But, the heat has been on for quite awhile across this region and shows no sign of letting up as we move into next week.
In fact, modeling is in agreement that the ridge in question will expand in the coming week, facilitating dangerous heat for a larger area.
In the animation above, we can clearly see triple digit temperatures begin to crawl north and east as the coming week wears on.
For those that reside in this region, it may be time to start making plans to stay cool. Make sure your AC units are serviced and ready, use caution in scheduling outdoor events, and make sure any elderly or ill relatives/neighbors are ready to endure the heat.
As residents of this region know well, this won’t be a “dry” heat. Humidity will make it feel much warmer during the day and prevent adequate cooling at night, which can tax the body.
As seen in the 500 mb heights animation, the ridge will also provide a path for disturbances to ride along. This will result in a long weekend full of severe weather threats.
It begins with an event for the Central/Northern High Plains today, slides to the Mid/Upper Mississippi Valley on Saturday, targets the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys on Sunday, and finishes in the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast on Monday.
As far as threats go, it will obviously vary from region to region based on the local set-up. However, it seems that damaging winds and large hail will be the primary threats, though a tornado or two also seems possible, though a bit more localized.
And, let’s not disregard the lightning threat.
Storms don’t have to be severe to turn deadly. If you’re outside enjoying summer weather, remember that if you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning. Head inside immediately.
If you’re dealing with heat this week – stay cool! If storms are the forecast for you – stay aware and stay safe! I’ll be on vacation through July 1st, but you’re in good hands with Armando. Check back for his blogs next week!
